ScreenConnect vs. TeamViewer

TeamViewer Logo

TeamViewer Alternative with Increased Flexibility

When you look at their online popularity it’s hard to challenge that TeamViewer is likely the most recognizable name in the industry, with a strong presence in Europe and abroad. TeamViewer provides a host of remote support options ranging in price from $750-$2,700 per license. The TeamViewer product is quite feature complete and supports Mac, Windows, and Linux. TeamViewer also provides a free, non-commercial version of their software and an iPhone application.

TeamViewer provides a single commercially available solution for remote support, remote access, and remote meetings. However, it is their free non-commercial use remote support client that is highly touted on the web.

ScreenConnect and TeamViewer are similar in their one-time purchase, but pricing, UI design, and scalability are quite different between the two products.

...There are much more expensive options that are simply less effective than ScreenConnect. Trust me, we have tried them ALL!

Key Points

TeamViewer users often ask about licensing. ScreenConnect licenses are concurrent meaning you can have as many support sessions in queue or unattended sessions established, but only one concurrent license is consumed when connecting to a guest. Hosts can easily navigate between guests in queue limiting the number of licenses required. Additional advantages of using ScreenConnect include:

  • ScreenConnect is hosted on your environment, providing complete security and customization.
  • ScreenConnect licenses are concurrent and not restricted to a particular number of workstations.
  • All ScreenConnect software updates are free to customers on active support. We don't charge for major build updates.
  • Technicians with access can start a sessions from any computer anywhere, no pre-installed software required.
  • ScreenConnect provides more extensive customization possibilities.
  • ScreenConnect offers individual and unlimited licenses at a fraction of the cost of TeamViewer.

ScreenConnect vs. TeamViewer Questions

How do you compare with TeamViewer?

It’s tough to compare the two products apples to apples because of the dramatic differences in licensing. But generally speaking we are about 1/3 the price of their business license. When comparing features our product is more comparable to the Premium or Corporate licenses. Our remote support and remote access tools are similar; they have a few more features but we feel our implementation is as strong in most use models. Then there is the security and configuration control of a solution that resides inside your own network.

TeamViewer allows multiple simultaneous sessions with their license, why doesn’t ScreenConnect?

TeamViewer allows 3 simultaneous sessions between the host and guests through a single business license. ScreenConnect allows unlimited simultaneous connections between the host and guest, but the host can only actively interact with one customer at a time. So admittedly it does take a few seconds to switch between each connection, but we allow unlimited connections waiting in queue.

What are the licensing differences?

TeamViewer licenses per workstation, while ScreenConnect is concurrent use. What that means is that for a standard TeamViewer business license to be used by other people it would cost an additional $139 per computer or you would have to purchase a Premium or Corporate license. ScreenConnect allows unlimited access to the licenses from any computer in the world — no pre-installation of software is required.

Do you have an Evaluation Benchmark like TeamViewer?

Okay, don’t get us started on the TeamViewer Evaluation Benchmark, a 90-point list of remote support “capability” for evaluation — and they score themselves perfect on each item? I guess that is good salesmanship, and they are certainly proud of their product. Our own Evaluation Guide will be available soon!

Why doesn’t ScreenConnect have a personal use or free version of their software?

We have considered releasing a personal use license, but we would only do so if we felt we could provide something that would be different than the current free offerings. We launched ScreenConnect because we felt the industry prices of Bomgar, TeamViewer, and the various hosted solutions were too expensive, and the free tools were not as reliable as we wanted.

Why choose ScreenConnect over TeamViewer?

If you are looking for every bell and whistle imaginable, TeamViewer (today) might be the best solution. But you will be paying a premium for the software; the most equivalent TeamViewer license to ScreenConnect is their corporate which is list price $3,200 or ~10x the cost of a ScreenConnect license. We don’t have every feature of TeamViewer, but we provide a solid feature set at an affordable price which makes us an ideal low-cost TeamViewer alternative.
